I am a senior neurologist at the Department of Neurology and a group leader at the DZNE focussing on the understanding of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and its interplay with neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Within an international and multicenter national consortium I am working on large cohort studies comprising patients with hypertensive arteriopathy (HA) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) that have cognitive testing, multimodal imaging, genetics and CSF biomarker data available. I am also working on a rat model of cerebral small vessel disease applying intravital 2-Photon-Microscopy to visualize the small vasculatur, its blood flow and perivascular protein accumulations (e.g. Ab). The overall aim of my studies is to understand how early small vessel wall damage, i.e. blood-brain-barrier leakage, relates to an inflammatory response, depositions of pathological proteins, extracellular matrix remodelling, neurodegeneration and finally behavioral disturbances.

I am further working in the field of motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS) applying peripheral nerve ultrasound, 7T ultra-high resolution magnetic resonance neurography and fusion imaging of both techniques. I aim to understand how inflammation of the peripheral nervous system modulates the course of disease and how it can serve as a marker to predict the patients‘ long-term prognosis and their treatment response within clinical trials.
