X-ray based imaging and computer tomography (CT) in principle allow imaging at a very high spatial (below 1 nm) and temporal resolution (far below 1ns) as well as might feature spectral tissue information. However, due to many technical limitations, in medicine, we achieve poor resolutions of up to 0.1 mm and provide (strong) artefact disturbed images. The focus of our group is the continuous improvement of the image quality of the state-of-the-art X-ray equipment as well the extension of the available features, e.g. establishing functional imaging. Our long-term goal is to exploit the whole potential of the X-ray modality for medical applications.
The second research domain of the group is the smart decoding of brain signals, i.e. ECoG, MEG, EEG to be applied in Brain-Machine-Interfaces (BMI). The focus is on the development of real-time, adaptable decoding algorithms, which incorporate external knowledge sources to ensure optimal classification performance in any environment and context.
