We investigate the functional anatomy and physiology of neuronal circuits that underlie learning and memory functions of the brain. We combine behavioral experiments in animals and humans with diverse physiological approaches including electrophysiological recording (single cells, cell assemblies, local field potentials, electrocorticograms, EEG), optical recording (voltage-sensitive dyes), as well as optogenetic and pharmacological intervention strategies. A particular focus of our work is the interaction between sensory systems of the brain and systems evaluating the meaning of stimuli and behaviors for an individual animal or human, as the neuronal basis of goal-directed and motivated behavior.
