Our research is focused on the application of light to further our understanding of the brain – beyond what has been possible with traditional electrical methods. To achieve this goal, we are using optogenetics to specifically stimulate genetically defined neuronal populations and genetic indicators to read out neuronal activity. We are particularly interested in cortical circuits, both to understand their basic function in perception and plasticity but also in applying the knowledge gained in these studies to developed advanced cortical brain machine interfaces based on optical techniques.
