Director of the Department for Biometrics and Medical Informatics, Medical Faculty at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg
The „Department for Biometrics and Medical Informatics“ focused on three main research fields: a) real-time functional MRI (rt fMRI) and EEG including human brain interfaces with integrated adaptive virtual reality environments, b) Ultra high field (UHF) MRI and c) development of hyperpolarization techniques and fluorinated contrast agents. In the rt fMRI/EEG project the human brain activity is monitored during performing special tasks in Virtual reality environments. This is used to build specialized brain computer interfaces and to analyse brain activity with two coupled scanners in real time (social rt fMRI). In addition to these projects we develop and test new coil set-ups for 7T UHF MRI including non-proton 7T MRI (13P, 19F). Another neuroimaging project was the optimization of diffusion MRI at 7T. In our basic NMR research we investigate new hyperpolarization techniques such as parahydrogen-induced polarization and photo-CIDNP, which allow MR signal enhancements of up to a factor of 10000. Furthermore, novel potential fluorinated MR contrast agents will be examined in cell culture and animal studies.
