The main scientific interest focuses on understanding the complex dynamics of the neural proteomes during synaptogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and in the course of (healthy) aging. For this we developed metabolic labeling approaches to investigate de novo synthesized proteins and de novo fucosylated proteins in neurons and astrocytes. In combination with molecular, biochemical, as well as imaging techniques we aim to decipher the functional role of the tripartite synapse in mammalia and in Drosophila for the healthy as well as the diseased brain. This includes mechanisms of local protein synthesis, autophagy, and general protein homeostasis.
